Inspired by a winter artist residency in a Norwegian forest, White Owl was painted as an expression of love and respect for the creatures of the woods during the quietest and coldest time of the year. Adrianne has long loved Norway, and spending winter there in the solitude of a cabin in the woods brought her into harmony with the rhythms of the local wildlife and nature there.
This piece particularly reflects on finding one's way in the dark, something owls are adept at doing. During the darkest months in Norway, there's very little light. The sun is often seen just over the horizon for a few hours a day. Adrianne felt that the dark wintery environment reflected her inner state at that time, and she painted this as an image to meditate on for remembering how to find one's way back to the light.
